Biography 

 

Born in Yorkshire into a musical family, Peter was surrounded and influenced by music from an early age.

He started learning the cello aged 7 and soon enjoyed success playing in a string quartet with his older brother playing 1st violin. They reached the National Chamber music Competition for Schools finals, three years in succession, culminating in performances in St. John’s, Smith Square, London. This inspired him to develop his playing further and he went to study privately with Sue Lowe and Anna Shuttleworth.

Peter was a student for four years on the BMus(hons) course at the Royal College of Music where he received cello lessons from Anna Shuttleworth, Alexander Baillie and Amanda Truelove. He was awarded a First for his final recital performance and went on to study a PGDip at the RCM, supported by a Leverhulme postgraduate studentship, with Leonid Gorokhov as his teacher. During his time at the RCM, Peter won the Anna Shuttleworth Competition for Unaccompanied Cello and was presented with the Leo Stern award. Whilst at the RCM, he had masterclasses with William Pleeth and Steven Isserlis.

 

As a much sought-after recording artist, Peter is regularly asked to record solo cello for radio, film, and television. As a solo cellist he has recorded for BBC Radio 3, and for several BBC1 documentaries. He has also recorded solo cello on feature films at the famous Abbey Road studios. As a solo artist he has worked with leading film composers such as Steven Price on his BAFTA award winning musical score for The Hunt, and he has ongoing professional relationships with many talented independent film and television composers.

 

 

As a freelance cellist, Peter has played with many top classical orchestras and opera companies in Britain and abroad including Opera North, Longborough Opera,  RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra. He was a full-time musician with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra(2016-17). This gave him the opportunity to work with classical stars such as Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble, and great conductors including Charles Dutoit, and Gustavo Dudamel. He has also performed chamber music with Pavlo Beznosiuk (leader of the Academy of Ancient Music), Wang Xiaoming (of the Stradivari quartet), and with pianist Chian- Ying Chan (of the Fournier Piano Trio).

 

 

Peter has also worked as a musician in the theatre and performed many times as cellist with the Royal Shakespeare Company at Stratford-Upon-Avon. He has held the cello chair on productions of  The Magician's Elephant (2021), The Whip (2020), Twelfth Night(2018), Hecuba(2015), The White Devil(2014), and The Shoemaker’s Holiday(2014). He recently performed at the Hackney Empire in a world premiere of Vanara The Legend (2021).He has also performed at the West Yorkshire Playhouse (Peter Pan) using both an acoustic cello as well as a six-stringed electric cello.

 

Working for many years with talented singer/songwriter John Garrison as a member of the British Indie band Budapest, Peter toured Spain extensively,  playing live on National radio and television, and performing shows to sell-out audiences. His cello playing can be heard alongside Natalie Clein on John’s solo album, Departures.
